En la madrugada del 1 de septiembre de 1939, el acorazado alemán "Schleswig-Holstein" dio inicio a la Segunda Guerra Mundial bombardeando el fuerte polaco de Westerplatte en las costas del Mar Báltico. Un día después, el gobierno de Dánzig pidió su anexión al Tercer Reich bajo el lema Danzig ist eine Deutsche Stadt und will zu Deutschland (Dánzig es una ciudad alemana y quiere pertenecer a Alemania). Unos 10.000 polacos fueron asesinados en la primera semana de ocupación
